Sierra Leone: publisher accused of ridiculing president

On 5 March, Silvia Blyden, the publisher of privately owned daily newspaper the Awareness Times, was arrested for allegedly ridiculing President Ernest Bai Koroma.

Blyden was later released after several hours in custody. The arrest relates to a caricatured photograph of President Koroma with horns that appeared in the newspaper’s 29 February edition. A police source has hinted that Blyden will be formally charged with ridiculing the president under the obnoxious Public Order Act of 1965.
