Dissident Syrian freed
Syrian dissident Aref Dalila has been freed by Syrian authorities seven years into his ten-year jail term. The economist was jailed in 2002 on charges of inciting armed rebellion, spreading false information and trying to change the constitution by weakening national sentiment. Dalila was jailed after he called for greater political freedom and the end to government monopolies. Soon after his release he stated that his views had not changed and that his release had not come with any conditions to remain silent about his time in prison.
