The author of newspaper articles and a book which reported on the activities of the criminal underworld in Bulgaria has been shot dead. CPJ reports that Bobi Tsankov was shot dead on 5 January in Sofia. Hours later three individuals, all suspected crime bosses, were arrested by the Ministry of Internal Affairs but the charges were not disclosed.

Tsankov had been writing a series of reports which alleged to detail the activities of local crime bosses with the latest one alleging the murder of crime boss Zhoro Iliev had been ordered by rival Meto Ilienski .
