In bad faith: How religion is being weaponised by the right
03 Oct 23

The Autumn 2023 issue of Index looks at the rising threat of blasphemy laws and how they are being weaponised by the religious right. It paints a worrying picture, as people from around the world describe being robbed of their voice or persecuted in the name of religion. Oppressive regimes are using blasphemy laws as an excuse to silence dissidents, and the problem appears to be growing. We highlight the extent of the threat in this issue, with stories from Turkey to Pakistan to the United States reminding us that the dangers of censorship can be experienced everywhere. Outside of our special report, we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1973 coup in Chile with an article from Juan Carlos Ramírez Figueroa questioning the legacy of General Pinochet, as well as an exclusive new short story by Ariel Dorfman. Elsewhere, Mark Frary and Francis Clarke investigate Saudi Arabia's use of sport to hide its human rights record, Thiện Việt speaks to students in China who are refusing to rate the political credentials of other students, and Alexandra Domenech speaks to Russian dissident Alexandra Popova about remaining in Moscow despite being tortured by security forces.
