Tesco has dropped its legal action against the Guardian after the newspaper published a front-page apology and assented to paying Tesco’s damages to a charity of its choice, as well as its costs.

The apology was also published on the Guardian’s website. It acknowledged that the paper’s claims about Tesco’s tax payments were ‘unfounded’, and also agreed that a correction published in May had been insufficient. This ended the bitter battle that ensued between the two after the newspaper’s claim that Tesco was avoiding tax payment were made in February.

Tesco is still engaged in several defamation suits in South East Asia.
