The National Union of Somali Journalists is an association that promotes and protects freedom of the press and the interests of journalists in Somalia. NUSOJ systematically monitors and conducts investigations into violations of press freedom and human rights of journalists. It generates and rallies a national and global community of press freedom defenders to take effective action against press freedom violations.

Writer and Index on Censorship trustee Kenan Malik joins feminist writer Julie Bindel and Index on Censorship news editor Padraig Reidy at Queer Up North Festival in Manchester on Saturday 16 May. Said Tahlil, director of HornAfrik radio was shot dead in Mogadishu yesterday (4 February). Tahlil was attacked by gunmen while on his way to a meeting called by representatives of the al-Shabab militia.
