Media offices in Philippines fired at

Two unidentified gunmen riding on a motorcycle fired at the building where Bangued-based media offices are housed. Police have yet to establish if the shooting was aimed at the Catholic-run community weekly newspaper “Abra Today”, along with affliates dzPA and dwWM radio stations whose offices are within the building. Philippines: gunmen attack radio journalist

Radio Mindanao Network talk show host Dennis Cuesta was critically wounded by a gunman on 5 August 2008. Cuesta’s surgeon said the broadcaster remains in critical condition at the hospital’s intensive care unit. Police hinted that the attack on the broadcaster was job related while his wife, Gloria, confirmed that Cuesta had been receiving death threats before the attack. Cuesta’s show, ‘Straight to the Point’, is known for aggressive commentaries on issues such as illegal gambling, government corruption and drugs.

Philippines: journalist slain

Members of the Sison family, all reporters for Regional Bulletin, were attacked by gunmen on motorcycle on 1 July in Sariaya, about 60 miles (97 kilometres) south east of Manila. Robert ‘Bert’ Sison, who reported crimes and stories critical of local officials, was shot dead. His daughter Liwayway, 30 was wounded, while his other daughter Amirah, 24, escaped unharmed by pretending to be dead.

Philippines: reporter sentenced

Ninez Cacho–Olivares of the Daily Tribune has been sentenced to at least six months imprisonment after allegedly libelling a prominent lawyer in the Philippines.

The charges related to a 2003 article that included purported transcripts of conversations between lawyer Arthur Villaraza and a German building company seeking an airport terminal contract.

Cacho-Olivares is set to appeal the decision.
