Novaya Gazeta pulls journalists from Chechnya

In Russia, opposition daily Novaya Gazeta has announced that due to increasing dangers they will pull all their staff from Chechnya after a a string of killings there on human rights activists and journalists. In October 2006, the same paper’s investigative reporter Anna Politkovskaya, known for her scathing criticism of pro-Moscow Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov and the Kremlin, was shot dead. Activist and husband murdered in Chechnya

A Russian NGO chief and her husband were found shot dead in Chechnya on Tuesday, with their corpses stuffed into a car boot. The murder of the head of Let’s Save the Generation, Zarema Sadulayeva, and her husband came less than one month after Natalya Estemirova, one of the best known activists in Chechnya, was killed in similar circumstances. Mexican journalist killed and tortured

Mexican news broadcaster, Juan Daniel Martinez Gil, of the Radiorama station in the Mexican resort city of Acapulco, has been found dead with signs of having been tortured. “The body was buried, it had tape covering the face, it was beaten, swollen and without a shirt,” a spokesperson from Radiorama said. Ukraine finds “reporter’s skull”

Ukrainian investigators say they have found skull fragments believed to be those of the journalist, Georgiy Gongadze, who was decapitated in 2000. The find came just days after the arrest of a former Ukrainian general suspected of carrying out the murder. Read more here
