Filipino journalist recieves death threat text

Mario Alviso, manager of Radyo Nitin in the Philippines, has received a text message from an unidentified sender the day after the death of political commentator Godofredo Linao’s murder, stating that the killing was “just a sample” of what could be done, and that “he would be next.” Read more here

Media offices in Philippines fired at

Two unidentified gunmen riding on a motorcycle fired at the building where Bangued-based media offices are housed. Police have yet to establish if the shooting was aimed at the Catholic-run community weekly newspaper “Abra Today”, along with affliates dzPA and dwWM radio stations whose offices are within the building. Second Filipino journalist killed in a week

Tabloid coloumist Antonia Castillo has been shot dead by two men at close range following a brief chase on motorbikes. Castillo is the second journalist killed in the Philippines in the last week and the fifth journalist deliberately murdered in the country this year. Read more here

Philippines: gunmen attack radio journalist

Radio Mindanao Network talk show host Dennis Cuesta was critically wounded by a gunman on 5 August 2008. Cuesta’s surgeon said the broadcaster remains in critical condition at the hospital’s intensive care unit. Police hinted that the attack on the broadcaster was job related while his wife, Gloria, confirmed that Cuesta had been receiving death threats before the attack. Cuesta’s show, ‘Straight to the Point’, is known for aggressive commentaries on issues such as illegal gambling, government corruption and drugs.
